Back and Forth
I've been trying for a year and gotten nothing but "racist" or "republican!" or hands in the face as a response. Not sure which is more asinine in my case..."racist" or "republican..."
So I was pleased when I challenged D Voter in the comments section of this blog to response to some specific points. "D Voter" wrote me back - answering me point by point. As opinionated as this blog gets - I am very serious about posting a range of views. I love the discussion/argument.
Below is D Voter's response. My questions/challenges/topics are in italics.
Afterward I am re posting a comment regular Jeannie made - a series of questions. I invite any Obama supporter to answer these questions directly. Balance check: If you think Jeannie's questions are "old news" or "sour grapes" - I urge you to pretend she is asking about George Bush. Would those inclined to give Obama a pass or "move on" be so inclined to give W a pass - or "let it go"?
1st. D Voter:
-Start with DADT:
D Voter: What about it? he has always stated his plan was to send it through Congress. I have attached a link for your viewing pleasure from April 2008.. Read the last paragraph, it's pretty clear he was going through legislative channels on this one, too bad some didn't listen. It has only been 130, it took Clinton almost 2 years to get to the current policy, so let us try to be less disingenuous. I will give you I completely disagree with his gay marriage stance, who cares who gets married to who, none of my business, nor Obama's, nor anyone in the government for that matter. But again, your conflating him as a hypocrite for this, when it is a stated position, obviously others weren't listening.
Discuss the Iraq backtracks
I haven't really heard any backtracks, for the most part, there has been some talk of extending the 18 month timetable if security becomes a concern. Of course, I would actually be more worried if his position stayed exactly the same on this as he did not have 3 key parts to any war strategy: 1). His people analyzing the full scope of the operation. 2). Complete briefings on Iraqi security forces capabilities and 3). Situations on the ground change fluidly. I have linked another article - here - Start with Maliki is a politician paragraph and read the next 3, he was pretty clear things could change, and none of it was immediate.
Address the torture confusion
What torture confusion? He says we will no longer use those techniques and he is trying not to release the photo's based on the request of the Iraqi Prime Minister. I would ask you to clarify this question as I'm unsure what answer you want and where he has led us astray?
Speculate on why BHO won't release his academic records
No, I choose not to speculate on anything like that, not my place. What is proven is he has degrees from these places, verified by the schools, so who cares what his reasons for not releasing them are. Maybe he failed African American studies and would look like a tool, does it really matter? we know he couldn't have been worse than Bush or Kerry were, considering all the school he attended require at least a 2.0 (IE C average) to graduate, which based on all the info we have, he did receive a degree from these school, correct? And last I checked, Harvard Law wasn't accepting C students.
Tell us how you feel about his Date night.
Him and his wife went out on a date, why should I care? Do I think it is a presidents job to completely ignore his wife? It is easily verifiable that all presidents have travelled, why would I judge this one differently? I've seen Sarkozy vacationing with his second wife, do other world leaders not go out at all?
Tell us why "preventative detention" is better than what Bush did.
I disagree with Obama here, I disagree with him on no single payer/comprehensive public health option as well. I have a bit more faith that under Obama they may be less a legal clusterfuck, but we'll see how they are implemented, but it is OK to disagree with parts of people but still point out the inconsistencies in others arguments. I will ask how you think a Palin/McCain ticket would be any better for this issue? I will also ask if you can point me to where he said the US would never again engage in this activity?
Discuss the approval of 42 mountain tops being blown off.
I just don't know enough about mountaintop removal to even speculate, and I'm not going to try and learn it quickly enough to respond. the EPA approved it, I assume he has appointed a Democrat to head the EPA, so I'm not sure why I would possibly think I know more than that person. But again, my level of education regarding mountain top removal is so limited, I can only go with these people there based on my faith in other initiatives they have proposed.

Jeannie's questions for Obama supporters:
Can you please explain for me (and perhaps others who read LR):
1. Why did he lock down all his papers (college papers, full health report, state senate papers and all info regarding his place of birth)? These were provided without incident by all other candidates when they were asked about them as a matter of course.
2. Why he tried to pass on questions about his real relationship with Ayers, instead dismissing it as though he barely knows Ayers?
3. Why he was a customer of an ACORN front company (CSI), paying them $824,000.00 for "staging and sound systems" (when CSI doesn't engage in that business)? Where did that money go and for what?
4. Why he rec'd MI's delegates from the DNC when his name wasn't on the ballot in that state?
5. Why did his wife receive a nearly $200,000.00 salary increase as a VP of a Chicago hospital once he was named a state senator?
6. Why hasn't his campaign money been accounted for? And why was he able to say that he doesn't take PAC money just because it wasn't aggregated into a PAC, but came from the same Wall Street financiers that gave to other candidates?
7. Why were surrogates (surrogates, not disconnected people with an arm's length relationship to his campaign) called upon to call Democratic voters and Democratic candidates 'racist'?
8. Why was it okay for him to repeatedly play the race card, but to remain silent on accusations of his own use of sexism when such use was blatant? Why didn't he disavow or denounce his surrogates who engaged in blatant misogyny and sexism?
9. Why did he take foreign campaign contributions from countries like Switzerland and others but most notably 3 known Hamas supporters, in clear violation of campaign finance laws?
10. Speaking of campaign finance: why did he speak forcibly of the 'democratic' ideals of public campaign financing and then renege on that promise?
11. Why has he given the men who intimidated voters in PA DOJ cover which will dismiss further investigation into that incident?
12. Why did busloads of IL state residents show up in Indiana and asked what they were doing there said: "We were told to vote here (for Obama)"? (See ACORN, above).
13. Why do you support a candidate who was apparently an inactive member of the IL state senate and spent most of his time as a U.S. Senator, seeking public office?
These are only a few of the questions that come to mind and are not necessarily in any order or even the most important ones.
