Make no bones about it: Obama's bow to Emperor Akihito is an attack on all of us.
It's hard for me to quantify how repellent I find Obama's bow to the Japanese emperor. It confirms assumptions so many have about Obama being "the other". Assumptions I am not opposed to for the most part. He is, in many ways, not like us. He's the most unAmerican American President we've ever had in upbringing, thought process, and connection to his citizens. Without his media support, the residual pain of the Bush years, and the loud children on the Left, I suspect there would be little support left for him. It's hard to fathom how any American feels a connection to him - black or white. His speeches come from the mountain top, his attitudes, when mistakenly revealed, are condescending and his narcissism is degrading and harmful.
His bow to the descendant of the ruling house of a country that attacked us, an attack remembered by many still alive, is beyond the pale. It is disgusting.
Real Americans don't bow. To anyone. It violates every principle of republicanism. It is flies in the face of our history and revolution. An American head of state bowing to a foreign head of state is an attack of the first order on American principles and values. Obama must be excoriated for his putrid action.
Finally: I can no longer say the current President has any business representing the United States. Whatever the excuse given for his action - it speaks volumes about the man's thinking and character. The United States is a country among countries. We are subservient to no one. If our head of state is either so green or believes American Presidents should bow to others - then he is not worthy of the office. Our head of state represents all of us. When he bows to a another head of state he is symbolically bowing for all of us. Obama knows this. By prostrating himself he is taking a pot shot at the citizens he represents.Labels: Barack Obama, bowing

Being gone all day most of the news is already fully aired...but some flotsam and jetsum:
Passing Strange: Few conservatives have grown on me more than Charles Krauthammer. Our president came bearing a basketful of mea culpas. With varying degrees of directness or obliqueness, Obama indicted his own people for arrogance, for dismissiveness and derisiveness, for genocide, for torture, for Hiroshima, for Guantanamo and for insufficient respect for the Muslim world...It is passing strange for a world leader to celebrate his own country's decline. Two telling photos of the Obamas emerged today.
One is of Michelle Obama slipping her arm around Queen Elizabeth. This is a protocol no no and I support it completely. Years ago an American women in D.C. found herself so ecstatic to be in the presence of the Queen she hugged her causing a minor bruhaha. I loved her for it. It was an exuberant embrace that was quintessentially American. Mrs. Obama's gesture was subtle and tasteful apparently in response to the Queen slipping her arm around her first. The pic can be seen here and it looks charming.
Another photo showed our President bowing to the King of Saudi Arabia. This is repellent. There is not enough emphasis I can put on this: Americans do not bow to royalty. Ever.
Ever. Ever. EVER.
We do not believe in kings. Every American bone in my American body vibrates with repulsion at Obama's action. Noquarter discusses the appearance of weakness Obama gave off with his grovel. The policy signal concerns me less than the idea of an elected American President bowing to a royal anything. What was he thinking? Who is this man? Bowing to a king is a profoundly un-American action.
We've managed to avoid the world wide addiction to royalty for 200 plus years. We live in a republic - still - I suggest the "constitutional scholar" in the White House bone up on the Constitution.Labels: Barack Obama, bowing, Constitution, Michelle Obama, Republic, Royalty
