The level of corruption in American society has reached a Soviet scale with the announcement this week by Goldman Sachs of 3.44 billion dollars in profits during the second quarter. Matt Tabibbi - once again - explains the amorality of "banks" like Goldman Sachs:
Taken altogether, what all of this means is that Goldman's profit announcement is a giant "fuck you" to the rest of the country. It is a statement of supreme privilege, an announcement that it feels no shame in taking subsidies and funneling them directly into their pockets, and moreover feels no fear of any public response. It knows that it's untouchable and it's not going to change its behavior for anyone. And it doesn't matter who knows it.
This is simply more proof that representative democracy is dead in this country. We have become a country for Goldman Sachs, run by Goldman Sachs so the Goldman Sachs will not perish from the earth. Both libertarian Glenn Beck and mega liberal Amy Goodman have spoken out on Goldman's rapacious greed. To say those 2 are strange bedfellows is to misunderestimate the world "strange". Surreal is more like it. Let's take the pairing as an early sign of my prediction that we'll all be libertarians in the end.
I'll add to this old joke:
What's a conservative? A liberal who's been mugged.
What's a liberal? A conservative who's been served a subpoena.
What's a libertarian? A conservative or liberal who's country has been sold off to pirates in Armani suits.
As anyone who comes around here knows I am deeply cynical about our ability to survive this latest - and,I bet, last - round of looting that BushBama has unleashed. (One could argue that Obama's economic policy is a wholly owned subsidiary of Goldman Sachs.) The glue that adheres us could easily be blown apart by the financial rape of the entire middle class.
Why we have not rebelled yet is anyone's guess. We are distracted constantly? We are all twittering while Rome burns? Most people are so overfed on some version of corn product that we can't be bothered to get off the couch? Everyone is mellowed out on anti-depressants?
One can dismiss the idea of "class warfare" but in reality it has already been declared - by the criminals at Goldman Sachs.Labels: bailouts, class warfare, Goldman Sachs, middle class, profits
Freemenow has all the Letterman advertisers contact info listed here. I link it for this reason: If - for example - Jon Voight were making the rounds mocking the children of say...Joe Biden...in a blatantly bigoted way the alleged Left would be insane with rage. The fact that Letterman's continued jokes have to do with - there is no other word - rape- triples the fury that real liberals, - and conservatives, and libertarians, and all decent people should be expressing.
I repeat: The Left sold its soul last year utterly and completely - at a bargain rate I might add. What it got in trade was a confused, narcissistic, statist who doesn't give a shit about any "social justice" that might lower his poll ratings. The attack on gays in the military goes on with the help of his Justice department, mountains are being blown up in West Virginia, hundreds of civilians have been slaughtered by Obama approved drones in Pakistan.
Good call "liberals". Sure glad you "won." Boy Howdy, I'm glad that evil McCain/Palin ticket didn't win. Maybe then 43 mountains would be blown to hell and back and not just 42.
Let us call the Obama Pod People what they are finally and forever: fucking amoral morons.
The Left has castrated itself with eyes wide shut and a smile on its face - and yes, I get the irony of the male metaphor in this case.
During the course of 2008 the media and the Obamablogs made it perfectly acceptable for people who claimed to stand for "social justice" to attack, debase, insult, and degrade any woman they did not agree with. Mostly - but not exclusively, and let's be clear here, they insulted working class women. Which is why Palin - who could actually feed her family if she had to with a rifle and a knife and has no Ivy league degree on the wall - was such a juicy target for the Huffpo/Kos goons. The atmosphere of degradation was re-created last year during the mindless, sexist assault on Clinton.
Every bit of my belief system regarding true egalitarianism is now affronted by the Letterman debacle. The silence on most of the Left is grotesque. So where are they? The most disheartening truth may be that many women and men on the Left don't see any problem with the verbal assault on a 14 year old girl who happens to be the child of a conservative. Also please remember this: It is not merely about sexism - it is about class as well. It is open season on poor and middle class whites. If the economy continues to stagger the attacks on and demonization of the poor and middle class will increase.
The entire point of all progressive movements has been that everyone get a place at the table. This has now been completely submerged - if not destroyed. Which, of course, was probably the point of Soros creating Obama in the first place.
The Left attacked women last year with the glee of the racists who watched lynchings in the 1930s. An don't let the bogus "she's 18 now" excuse cloud the point. Sullivan and his ilk went nutters on Britol Palin when she was 17. Letterman's excuse that he meant the 18 year old Palin daughter and his appalling "apology" are despicable. He is either lying to get more Palin punching mileage in or is not man enough to own that the original vulgarity demanded that he make a sincere apology.
The Chicago Tribune has called for a real apology. They are correct.
Again I repeat: It is not the Right that is lost. In fact, the Right has its bearings in hand. They are weakened now - but not lost. The "Left" is in power but utterly without a core. It is Left that is staggering.Labels: class warfare, David letterman, dumb liberals, fake liberals, Sarah Palin, sexism
Let's here it for the populists. The condescension around even the phrase "class warfare" needs to end. Remove "warfare" and replace it with - shall we say...class "social justice."* - only because I loath the phrase "social justice" in its current incarnation and I'd like the two words back.
This society - esp its middle and lower classes - need some justice about now. If Hillary can't survive the Obama morass - I am perfecting happy to salute smartly for New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo should he have higher aspirations. He is taking BofA by the collar and at least trying to shake them down - and God bless him for it.
As I said I do not like "warfare" being bandied about. But don't think for a minute "class warfare" is not already happening just because we don't like the phrase. The middle and working class is "under attack". And not from homosexuals with an "agenda" or crazed atheists.
So far I find the Obama Admin only mildly less distressing than the one before. (two or three points granted from the L.R. executive committee in my head for lifting the choice gag and the stem cell research ban...) It is all blow and nearly no go with Barry. (apologies to Larry Sinclair) For God Sake Barry, nationalize the toxic banks for a year. Shake the crooks down and restore some teeny amount of confidence. Prove that you aren't their lackeys. So far you are trying to play us by acting as if you care. "Us" being the lower 98% of money makers.
(Please note: I know Barry won't really bite the hand that spoon feeds him. I still believe that Obama is an errand boy, sent by grocery clerks, to collect a bill. Or rather to collect the rest of our cash. But I must, at least, implore, before we implode.)
We can all get huffy about "class warfare" - but the fact remains that the middle and working classes are being looted. As we speak. Retirement! Ha! Pension! Ha! Call it whatever you like. "Class looting". The victims are real and coming to a soup kitchen near you. Where do you think all the bailout money is coming from and going to...?
Obama has spoken loudly on responsibility and ending the taxpayer payoffs for these crooks. And, as usual, that's about all he done. How can he? He hired the perpetrators as soon as he won. Chomsky hit it with: These people should not be giving advice to the President, they should be getting indictments.
This last gasp attempt to save a patient that is terminal is just not worth it. The system of financial hijinks and false wealth failed. Let's start with that truth, get some justice, and move on. A guilty plea here and some jail time there is not enough. We need real justice. The punishment for the Madoffs and all those like him must be severe
Call it whatever you want. The war was declared a long time ago- most of just did not know we were combatants.
*(My B.S. detector starts jumping whenever I hear "social justice." Usually people who say it really mean "These people are victims and it gives me a sense of self importance to point that out and unconsciously keep them that way." There is nothing liberal or progressive about this sentiment - however well intended. It is retrogressive in a way that would make Margaret Thatcher blanch. Has any ideology hurt working class people more than the Saul Alinsky school of putrefied resentment? At least the real fascists were up front about attacking the already marginalized.)Labels: Barack Obama, class warfare, screw the middle class, social justice
